The english tenses
Like in most languages, tenses are meant to describe a certain temporal context, at least most of them. Therefore it is essential for mutual understanding to be able to use the tenses correctly so that a conversation doesn't lead to misunderstandings. AND, the wrong use of tenses CAN eventually lead to great misunderstandings.
Here is some basic information about tenses.
The thing about the Present Simple Tense
Other than most tenses, the Present Simple Tense is not used for any temporal context. It is used to describe what we do in general, regularily, usually or only sometimes or never. We also express our feelings and preferences (mostly) in this tense. Also, facts about anything are expressed in this tense. For further information go to the detailed page about the
Present Tens e.
The Progressive Tense
All tenses can be expressed in the progressive or continuous form. This form, as its name already states, is used to express actions that take a longer period of time, in any temporal context. The exception from this is the Present Progressive Tense, which expresses an action or event taking place at the very moment of narration.
The Future Tense
Althought there are generally only two ways to express the future, the going-to-future and the will-future, one has to notice that future events can be expressed in any other form depending on what extactly one wants to say. For further details, click the menu on the left.
